Materialism

Wherever you turn, you cannot escape the religion of materialism. People are more interested in material possessions than anything else. Our marketing agencies have capitalized this in every commercial that we see on television. The message that they are sending us is that we will be happier if we buy the product they are advertising.
Not only is this seen in our commercials, but it is also evident in our corporate environments. In the workplace, employees place more emphasis on their title, the corner window office and the reserved parking spot than they do on the work that they do. They are more concerned with their status in the workplace than they are with the quality of work that they perform.
The more material items that we get, we do not get happier. All we need to do is watch shows like "Clean Sweep" and "Clean House" to see that this is the case. The more material items that we get, the more disorganized our lives become and the less happy we are.
Not only does materialism detrimental to our lives here on earth, it is also detrimental to our eternal lives. As we focus more on our possessions, we focus less on what matters: Jesus Christ.
"For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?"
-- Matthew 16:26
