A young monk arrives at the monastery. He is assigned to helping the other monks in copying the old canons and laws of the church by hand.
He notices, however, that all of the monks are copying from copies, not from the original manuscript. So, the new monk goes to the head abbot to question this, pointing out that if someone made even a small error in the first copy, it would never be picked up! In fact, that error would be continued in all of the subsequent copies.
The head monk, says, ‘We have been copying from the copies for centuries, but you make a good point, my son.’
He goes down into the dark caves underneath the monastery where the original manuscripts are held as archives in a locked vault that hasn’t been opened for hundreds of years.
Hours go by and nobody sees the old abbot . .
So, the young monk gets worried and goes down to look for him. He sees him banging his head against the wall and wailing.
‘We missed the R! We missed the R! We missed the R!’
His forehead is all bloody and bruised and he is crying uncontrollably. The young monk asks the old abbot, ‘What’s wrong, father?’
With a choking voice, the old abbot replies, ‘The word was… ‘CELEBRATE’!!!
Once again, we have had to deal with a tropical system dealing us a direct hit. This time it was only a tropical storm and it came up from the south. There was a lot of rain and brief gusts that were close to, if not at, hurricane force.
Now comes the long process of cleaning up all the yard waste that was thrown around. But first, we have to wait for the water to go away. Mid-day numbers indicated over 7 inches of rain since the storm first started affecting us yesterday evening.
Fay managed to maintain its strength as it traveled up the state. Fourteen hours after making landfall at Cape Romano, Fay’s central pressure has dropped and the winds have increased. The forecasts call for it to exit Florida around Melbourne and re-enter the state around Jacksonville.
Keep an eye on this storm, it’s going to be around for a while.
Wherever you turn, you cannot escape the religion of materialism. People are more interested in material possessions than anything else. Our marketing agencies have capitalized this in every commercial that we see on television. The message that they are sending us is that we will be happier if we buy the product they are advertising.
Not only is this seen in our commercials, but it is also evident in our corporate environments. In the workplace, employees place more emphasis on their title, the corner window office and the reserved parking spot than they do on the work that they do. They are more concerned with their status in the workplace than they are with the quality of work that they perform.
The more material items that we get, we do not get happier. All we need to do is watch shows like “Clean Sweep” and “Clean House” to see that this is the case. The more material items that we get, the more disorganized our lives become and the less happy we are.
Not only does materialism detrimental to our lives here on earth, it is also detrimental to our eternal lives. As we focus more on our possessions, we focus less on what matters: Jesus Christ.
“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?”
– Matthew 16:26
